TCAS Flashcards
What will you get if the other aircraft only has a mode A transponder
Traffic advisory
When will the system issue a resolution advisory
15 to 35 seconds CPA
When will the system issue a traffic advisory
20 to 48 seconds CPA
When will the system issue a proximate advisory?
Traffic that is within 6nm away and is not classified as TA or RA
What is the surveillance and display range?
Surveillance - 14 nm
Display - 12 nm
How many aircraft can be detected and tracked simultaneously?
Up to 30
Where are the TCAS antennas?
Two - one on the top and one on the bottom of the fuselage
What are the possible options for the A/B pb?
ABV - 9900 to -2700 ft
Normal - 2700 to -2700 ft
BLW - 2700 to -9900 ft
What does the RNG pb do?
Switches between the 6nm and 12nm forward range
What is the STBY mode?
Power is supplied to the system but TCAS functions are inhibited
What is the AUTO mode?
Normal operating mode
TCAS tracks all the aircraft in surveillance area and provides RAs and TAs
What is the TA ONLY mode?
Same as AUTO but no resolution advisories
What is the maximum range for traffic display on the indicators?
12 nm
What is the minimum range?
6 nm with the inner range ring remaining at 2 nm
What happens when mode selector is set to STBY?
All TCAS operations disabled
Indicated by a TCAS OFF flag displayed on right hand side of the display
What does an open cyan diamond mean?
Other traffic - traffic within the selected display range but not considered a threat
What does a solid cyan diamond mean?
Proximate traffic - within +/- 1200 ft relative altitude and 6nm but not considered a threat
What does a solid yellow circle mean?
Traffic advisory - approx 40 secs from the CPA
What does a solid red square mean?
Resolution advisory - 25 secs from CPA
When will there be an up or down arrow?
Aircraft is climbing or descending at more than 500fpm
What are traffic advisories inhibited?
900 ft AGL when the aircraft is descending
1100 ft AGL when the aircraft is climbing
What does “climb crossing climb” indicate?
The flight path of the aircraft will cross the path of the other traffic whilst maintaining separation
What does “adjust vertical speed - adjust” indicate?
You should reduce or increase the rate of climb to that shown by the green arc on the VSI/TRA
What does “reduce descent” mean?
You should reduce rate of descent to that shown on the green arc
What does “monitor vertical speed, monitor vertical speed” mean?
You should monitor your present vertical speed to prevent entering the restricted vertical speed range depicted by the red arc on the display
What does “climb - climb now” mean?
Indicates a reversal of vertical speed is required
When are descend advisories inhibited?
When the aircraft is less than 1000 ft AGL during an approach or below 1200 ft AGL on take off
“Increase descent” advisories are inhibited less than 1450 ft during a descent and less than 1650 ft during an approach
When are résolution advisories inhibited?
When aircraft is less than 1100 ft AGL during a climb and 900 ft AGL during a descent
TCAS automatically reverts to TA ONLY mode at these points
When is an intruders altitude ignored?
When it is below 380 ft, it is considered to be on the ground
What failure indications appear on the VSI/TRA?
VS failure
RA FAIL
TCAS FAIL
What does TD FAIL flag mean?
Displayed when the TCAS traffic detection function is unreliable
What does RA FAIL mean?
Indicates that the resolution advisory is unreliable
What does VS flag mean?
Indicates the VS is unreliable
The VS pointer will be removed from view
What does a TCAS FAIL flag mean?
Will be displayed and replace TEST flag if a failure is detected during a test
