What is the definition of a map?
A map is a graphic representation of a portion of the earth’s surface drawn to scale, as seen from above
What is the purpose of a map?
provides information on the existence of the location and the distance between ground features, such as populated places and routes of travel, and communication
What scale is a small map?
1: 1,000,000 and smaller in scale
What scale is a medium map?
1:1,000,000 to 1: 75,000 in scale
What scale is a large map?
anything greater than 1:75,000
What is the typical scale of a map used for land nav?
1: 50,000

What is an Azimuth?
horizontal angle measured clockwise from a north base line
What is an intersection?
location of an unknown point by successively occupying at least two (preferably three) known positions on the ground, and then map sighting on the unknown location
What is a resection?
locating one’s position on a map by determining the grid azimuth to at least two well-defined locations that can be pinpointed on the map
What is modified resection?
locating one’s position on the map when the person is located on a linear feature on the ground, such as a road
