TBI Flashcards
TBI
insult to brain caused by external physical force
acquired brain injury
all types of traumatic brain injuries and also brain injuries caused after birth by cerebral vascular accidents (commonly known as stroke), and loss of oxygen to the brain (hypoxic brain injury)
what happens to the brain in TBI
acceleration/deceleration, results in bruising of brain surface against rough ares of skull and stretching and twisting of nerve axons
closed head injury
skull is not broken
open head injury
skull is broken
what is a mild tbi
concussion
brief (less than 15 min) or no loss of consciousness
post traumatic amnesia is less than 1 hour
normal neurological exam
recover within 6 to 8 weeks if not sooner
cognitive communcation skills
combines thinking skills with language, attention, memory, problem solving, strategic learning, receptive skills (may not hear well)
whos at risk for tbi
sports and rec kids, particularly males 15-19 yrs old
secondary impact syndrome
fatal result of 2 concussions within a short period of time children who have brain injtbiury are twice as likely to get another within 6 months if not properly healed
tbi effects
tired, dizzy, continuing headache, memory issues, moody, depression, problems with emotional control
why is the impact of tbi often missed
children grow into their brain injuries, may not realize it when theyre young, but a tbi can effect development and kids might not be able to keep up with growing demands as they age because of their tbi
how is recovery duration affected by age
younger children more vulnerable to affects of concussion, longer recovery rates put them at greater risk for more injuries in the future
