language plasticity/cerebral palsy Flashcards
brain plasticity
brain is constantly changing throughout lifetime. can be changed by experiences and has ability to recover and re-organize after injury
critical period of language acquisition
before the age of 10
ex.young children can pick up foreign languages quickly and accent free
deprivation from abuse (Genie)
high rate of manual babbling in deaf children than non deaf children
importance of early intervention
children have better brain capacity than adults in their superior ability to learn language and their capacity to recover from brain injury. early intervention provides ciritical window of opportunity for children because of the high plasticity. receiving intense EI means they might be able to go to normal kindergarten and and need significantly less service in future years
cerebral palsy
motor function disorder about lack of muscle control. may be congenital or acquired. permanent, non progressive brain lesion, damage doesnt worsen
most cases of cerebral palsy occur
before birth (several causes preventable and treatable)
early signs of cerebral palsy
stiff or floppy posture, lack of head control, weak suck and feeding difficulties
2 primary factors influence language development of kids with cerebral palsy
- if they also have an intellectual disability
2. ability of how much they can explore environment
