what is AAC and who uses it
includes all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants and ideas, people who use it are the ones that cannot rely on their speech to be understood
unaided AAC
nonverbal means of communicating including gestures and expressions as well as signs. needs partner who understands signs
aided AAC
communication that provides external support such as pictures, printed words, ipad, etc
direct selection AAC
typing or point with hand, using headstick
scanning AAC
Items are presented one at a time and
either with or without the help of electronics the person chooses the symbol or symbols that they want
4 basic communication goals
to express needs and wants, social closeness, exchange information, fulfill social etiquette expectations.
SLPS tend to focus on just the needs and wants
problem with symbols
can be very basic, rich picture scenes should be used instead

- rituals/superstitions

- stages of sequential bilingualism
