Q

Early post traumatic seizures in children

A

unlike adults, early seizures in children do not correlate with the occurrence of late seizures
so if early seizure post trauma 1-7 days, EEG should be obtained next, and if no epileptiform activity, decr dose by 50% and then d/c the following week….

Q

Where does clonidine act in the brain for help with opiate withdrawal?

A

The locus coeruleus is a principle secretor of norepinephrine in the brain, which is suppressed with opiate use. When opiates are discontinued, norepinephrine production picks back up, which contributes to withdrawal. Clonidine suppresses this adrenergic action to reduce withdrawal symptoms.
