1968 code?
2008 mercantile code
1938 code = area exceeding 10,000’
1968 code = AREA exceeding 7,500’
2008 code= full building area exceeding 12,000’.
Or
Area on all floors including mezzanine a 24,000’
3 other reasons
1) 3 stories above ground
2) high rise building
3) unenclosed stairs or escalators connecting 2 or more floors
Factors that influence BACKDRAFTS
G O A T
GASES
OPENINGS made by FD n Prox.of them
AREAS, size
Turbulence in building caused by wind n velocity of hose stream
- can happen anywhere higher chance in cellars
- only needs 25% of its space to contain the explosive mixture
COCKLOFT FIRES
When the fire has control of the cockloft and the need for exposure protection is critical, what should the 1st Engine Do?
Position the engine to utilize the Deckpipe ..
In line pumping will give good positioning and allow room for placement of a Tower Ladder
When a fire has control of Cockloft
EXPOSURES ARE THE MAIN CONCERN. What do you do 1st line?
When the fire has control of the Cockloft does that change the operations of the 2nd Engine
usually they
* assist 1st engine
* If staffing n cond permit -supply sprinkler
* if staffing n cond permit -AFTER SUPPLYING SPRINKLER then stretch a back up line into the store
In-line pump and use deck gun
Stretch line into most severe exposure
Depending on Life Hazard n Location and severity of the fire
If exposures are not a threat the the
1st line should be stretched into the store under the main body of fire
Yes it does change up the SOPS for the 2nd engine they no longer have to Supply the sprinkler before stretching the 2nd Line ( still have to help with INITIAL LINE )
2nd Due engine
Cellar Fires ??
COCKLOFT fires?
Cellar Fires
1) help back up the 1st line
2) if staging and conditions permit stretch n supply the sprinkler
3) AFTER supplying the Sprinkler can stretch a 2nd line to back up the 1st
* if 1st line can’t advance Into the cellar take the second line into an EXTERIOR entrance
COCKLOFT Fire- DOSENT ATTEMPT to supply the sprinkler
1) assist 1st engine with initial line
2) stretch another line into another seriously exposed building/occupancy
In advanced Cellar fires SEARCH ROPES may be needed by engine and Ladder companies
What is considered the single most important factor in dealing with these fires?
The construction features is the most important factor
Trucks other then first and second do should bring 10 and 12 foot hooks along with their normal tools
What should be emphasized with 2 story taxpayers?
Emphasize on completely laddering the second floor
May need 10 foot hooks
Probability of why extending into the Cockcroft is greater
Do you cut wood joist roofs ?
How many foot intervals are there in the ceiling?
Do you cut open web steel joist roofs?
How many feet of the spans in these roofs?
Yes we must cut Wood Joist roofs These are the most common type of roofs The spans are at 20' intervals They may have scuttled n skylights Older tax payers
NO WE NEVER CUT OPEN WEB STEEL JOIST !!
60’ intervals gypsum plank 17.5 lbs sq ft
May collapse in 5-10 minutes
