Taste And Smell Flashcards
What are the five sensations ?
Sweet, salty, bitter, sour and umami
Why does taste sensitivity vary?
With age - less turnover of cells
Genetically - diff for each person
What do circumvallate papilla contain ?
Taste bus with specialised nerve cells and microvilliai (tiny extensions of surface which detect dissolved substance in saliva and activate cells by action potential)
Where are the nerve pathways on the tongue and what are they called ?
Facial nerve ( bottom of tongue ) convey taste Trigeminal nerve - texture of food , temp
What are the filiform papilla ?
Cause rough texture in mouth so food can grip so food can grip
What is the olfactory epithelium ?
Organ of sense of smell?
Why is there mucous in the nose ?
For protection against dust so doesn’t go to lungs
Medium where molecules can dissolve in
What is the nerve called that has directly feeds into cerebrum
Olfactory nerve - no processing which is why you associate smells with things because of lack of processing .
What is s molecule that we can smell called?
Odourant
What are olfactory cells and how do they accumulate ?
Nerve cells that have cilia attached which sit in mucous and are detect smells
Don’t divide but are constantly turning-over new ones
Sit in between supporting cells and mucous glands
Name the different neural pathways in the olfactory organ ?
Medial olfactory area = very old *
Lateral olfactory area = old *
Orbitofrontal cortex = new (allows linkage of smell to memory)
- evolutionary benefited- reflex response when something smells bad, fight or flight produces alert when smell dangerous
What is central adaptation ?
After a few mins of listening to loud noise, the brain will tune out unimportant things
