Taste and Smell Flashcards
pheromones
specialized olfactory cues; a chemical signal that is released by one member of a species and triggers an innate response in another member of the species
in insects, linked to mating, fighting
olfactory epithelium
the part of the nose that’s sensitive to various molecules. Contains the accessory olfactory epithelium and sends signals to the accessory olfactory bulb
accessory olfactory epithelium
contains the vomeronasal system
vomeronasal system
contains apical and basal cells that are sensitive to different molecules/pheromones
olfactory sense
sense of smell
5 tastes
- bitter
- salty
- sweet
- sour
- umami - glutamate
These all rely on a different type of receptor
ion channels
sour and salty use ion channels
G protein coupled receptors
bitter, sweet, and umami use G protein coupled receptors
taste bud types
- fungiform (anterior)
- foliate (side)
- circumvallate (back)
chorda tympani
The chorda tympani is a branch of the facial nerve that originates from the taste buds in the front of the tongue, runs through the middle ear, and carries taste messages to the brain.
ipsilateral
belonging to the same side of the body. Taste is perceived ipsilaterally.
contralateral
relating to or denoting the side of the body opposite to that on which a particular structure or condition occurs.. vision, hearing, and touch.
