Brain Parts Flashcards
Cortex
–the outer layer of the cerebrum (the cerebral cortex ), composed of folded gray matter and playing an important role in consciousness.
Cerebellum
- -The largest part of the brain
- -Divided into 4 lobes
Temporal lobe
- -associated with hearing (and smell, and memory)
- -Wernicke’s area is in the temporal lobe
Frontal lobe
- -associated with executive functioning and cognition
- -Broca’s area is located in the frontal lobe
- -Voluntary motor control
- -Problem solving
Parietal lobe
- -associated with sensations
- -touch, temperature, taste, pain
- -
Occipital lobe
–associated with sight
The Hindbrain
- -The parts of the brain under the cerebellum
- -Medulla, Cerebellum, Pons
Medulla Oblangata
- -controls heart rate
- -respiration
- -blood pressure
cerebellum
- -involved in coordination of motor control
- -hand-eye coordination is controlled in cerebellum
pons
–relay station b/w the cerebellum and cerebral hemispheres
basal ganglia
- -Are located deep within the cerebral hemispheres
- -Regular voluntary motor control and procedural learning related to habits
- -The basal ganglia works together with the cerebellum to coordinate movement–the basal ganglia are inhibitory while the cerebellum is excitatory
Limbic system
- -amygdala
- -hippocampus
- -thalamus
- -fornix
- -cingulate gyrus
- -functions: attention, emotions, memory, appetite, sexuality, aggression
hippocampus
memory
amygdala
- -emotion
- -aggression
hypothalamus
- -endocrine functions
- -temperature
- -appetite
- -sex drive
- -circadian rhythm
- -link b/w nervous system and endocrine system
corpus callosum
–connects the two hemispheres of the brain
serotonin
–emotions, judgement, eating and sleep disorders
GABA
- -anxiety, sleep
- -valium targets GABA
dopamine
- -memory, mood, movement
- -Parkinson’s
endorphins
–pain relief
thalamus
–relay station between mid-brain and higher brain and b/w mid-brain and nervous system
