taping Flashcards
what is the purpose of taping
provide support and protection to injured soft tissues and joints
minimize pain and swelling in acute stage
discuss the roles of taping
hold dressings and pads in place
to compress recent injury, thus reducing bleeding and swelling
to protect from further injury by supporting ligaments, tendons and muscles
to limit unwanted joint movement
to allow optimal healing without stressing the injured structures
to protect and support the injured structure in a functional position during exercise
discuss good quality tape
adhere readily & maintain adhesion perspiration and activity
discuss stretch or elastic adhesive tape
kinesiotaping or lymphatic taping - conforms and contours to body
compress and support soft tissue
provide anchors - allowing expansion
hold protective pads
will not give mechanical support to ligaments but may used in conjunction c rigid tape
discuss non-stretch adhesive tape
supports inert structures
limit joint movement
act prophylactically
secure ends of stretch tape
reinforce stretch tape
enhance proprioception
should be torn by hand to maintain tension
discuss hypoallergenic tapes
hypafix or fixomull as alternative to conventional zinc oxide adhesive tape
discuss cohesive bandages
used instead of stretch tape - light compression
product sticks to itself and not skin tas waterproof and reusable
useful when applying spica or cover up for taping
taping guidelines for preparing area to be taped
wash, dry and shave skin in downward direction - cover if ayaw
remove oils
cover broken lesions - gauze
check if allergic
apply lubricated protective padding to friction and pressure areas
adhesive spray for skin protection and better adhesion
apply underwrap or pro wrap
discuss taping application guidelines
all required materials at hand
athlete and PT in comfortable position
treatment part should be placed way from injury
apply tape at room temp
palce jt in functional pos c minimum stress to injured structures
use correct type, width and amount
sequential order and overlap by half
apply smoothly and firmly
flow c shape of limb
exp function and how it should feel
check if comfy and tama b
tape width for UE
2 in tapes
tape width for LE
4 in tapes
what should be avoided in taping
excessive traction - skin breakdown
gaps and wrinkles - blisters
continuous circumferential - single lang para uniform pressure
excessive layers - impair circulation and neural transmission
too tight over bony areas - bone ache or pressure ulcers
discuss taping removal
use flat base scissors para safe
cut along side of bony prominence - more space
peel off gently along axis of limb
inspect skin
do not leave tape more than 24 hrs
how should tape be stored
since zinc oxide adhesive mass is susceptible to temp change
cool place - original packaging or air tight container
not over 20°C
hirap punitin pag warm
hypoallergenic not sensitive to temp
discuss anchors
first strips of tape applied above and below the injury
subsequent strips are attached
minimize traction on the skin (skin drag) and are applied without tension
