Tannenbaum Schmidts Flashcards
What does it do
Scale to define how autocratic a managed is
Stage 1
Managers give no freedom to subordinates in decision making
1 - Tells - employees have no voice in decision making. Makes sense if you have unskilled workers, however skilled workers could become demotivated
Stage 7
Managers give lots of freedom to subordinates in decision making
Theory Y -subordinate oriented
Stage 2
Sells - authoritarian style - team still has no input however the manager ‘sells’ the decision. Subordinates feel manager has some concern for them
Stage 3
Suggests - manager makes decision however subordinates are invited to ask questions and share opinions and ideas. Actively encourages more participation which increases motivation.
Stage 4
Consults - managers make a tentative decision. Subordinates are invited for discussion and debates about the decisions and could potentially tweak it. More motivation
Stage 5
Joins - managers explain issue then everyone attempts to find the solution but manager has final say. Good if you have subject matter experts. Slows down decision making process
Stage 6
Delegates - manager explains problem and provides the subordinates with the resources provided. Subordinates make the decision but manager will be accountable. Lots of trust and motivation
Stage 7
Abdicates- subordinates would recognise issue and solve it. Full freedom. Hyper motivating if you have well trained staff. Managers still accountable
