Q

How is the shrew and shrew literature present in this scene?

A

In this scene, Katherina is once again presented as the ‘shrew’ and Petruchio tames her, which is more in itself emotionally abusive at this stage, and it even gets worse later in the play. However in the start of Act 3, we can see Bianca being quite ‘shrewish’ as she doesn’t listen to Hortensio and this could be seen as ‘shrew’ by an Elizabethan audience, and this contradicts the idea of Kate being shrewish and Bianca being the perfect daughter.

Q

How is Elizabethan views on marriage shown in this act?

A

In this Act, Petruchio embarasses Kate by turning up underdressed and late for the wedding, in an effort to tame her and embarrassing her at the altar, yet this is not really seen as a problem to anyone as the real reason Kate is getting married is because they want to marry her off so that Bianca can get married, she was just taken out of the picture.
