What is AWOCA?
A tactical communication tool which provides officers the confidence that they have treated the subject reasonably and fairly.

Ask- ask the person to do what it is you want/need them to do.

Why - Explain the reason for your request.
(Ask and Why can be combined in either order)
O
Options - Good, Bad, Good. Explain advantages of good option, consequences of bad. Start good, finish good. Find the right motivator for the subject e.g get home to bed, carry on with your night, get some food etc.
C
Confirmation- confirm they understand the requirement to cooperate and the consequences of failing to.
Final opportunity - ‘Is there anything I can reasonably say or do to get you to … I would like to think there is’
A
Action - time for talk is over, take appropriate action to safely resolve the situation.
