T7 (Climatic Change / Energy) Definitions Flashcards
Energy Security
The uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price (a country’s ability to secure all its energy needs)
Climate
The ‘average’ weather over the long term (e.g. years) often at a regional level
Weather
The conditions over a short time scale (e.g. day to day) at a local level
Tipping Point
A level of change in system properties beyond which a system reorganizes, often abruptly, and does not return to the initial state even if the drivers of the change are abated. The tipping point event may be irreversible
Mitigation
A human intervention to reduce the sources or enhance the sinks of greenhouse gases (GHGs)
Adaptation
The process of adjustment to actual or expected climate and its effects
Energy Insecurity
A lack of security over energy sources
