(T4.3, L5) Plant diseases- TMV and Rose Black spot Flashcards
What pathogen type is Rose black spot?
Fungi
What are the signs that a plant is infected with Rose black spot?
Purple/black spots develop on the leaves causing them to turn yellow and drop early.
How does Rose black spot affect photosynthesis?
It reduces the area of leaf available for photosynthesis so the plant cannot grow properly.
How does Rose black spot spread?
Spores are carried in the wind and spread over the plant as water drips from one leaf to another.
What are 2 ways gardeners prevent/treat Rose black spot?
- Removing/burning affected leaves
- Using chemical fungicides to treat/prevent the spread of disease
What does TMV stand for?
Tobacco Mosaic Virus
What pathogen type is TMV?
Virus
What are signs that a plant is infected with TMV?
‘Mosaic’ pattern of discolouration on the leaves because of destroyed cells.
How does TMV affect photosynthesis?
Affected areas cannot photosynthesise so the plant cannot properly grow.
What are 3 ways TMV spreads?
- Contact between diseased and normal plants
- Insects acting as vectors
- Through infected soil (virus stays infectious in soil for 50 years)
What are 2 ways gardeners prevent TMV?
- Good field hygiene/ pest control
- Removing/ burning affected leaves
