What is an epidemic?
A virus spread in one country.
What is a pandemic?
A virus spread over many countries.
What is measles?
A virus spread through contact with other people.
How does measles spread? (4)
Through breathing, coughing, sneezing and close contact.
What are the symptoms of measles? (4)
High fever, runny nose, red eyes and a rash.
Is there a vaccine for measles?
Yes, it is 97% effective.
What are the serious complications of measles? (4)
Pneumonia, ear infection, diarrhoea and brain swelling.
What does HIV stand for?
Human Immunodeficiency Virus
What are the 4 ways you can get infected with HIV?
Through blood, semen, rectal/vaginal fluids and breast milk.
What does HIV feel like at first?
A short flu-like illness which gets better.
The human host cell for HIV is?
T-cells
What is the difference between HIV and AIDS?
HIV is just a viral infection, it may develop into AIDS overtime as the immune system gradually weakens.
What happens when you have HIV?
Your immune system weakens and has a hard time fighting illness.
What is AIDS?
AIDS is the late stage of HIV that occurs when the body’s immune system is badly damaged because of the virus.
What are 3 diseases an AIDS patients immune system cannot fight off?
Pneumonia, salmonella and tuberculosis.
