What is transcribing?
- Act of writing down or copying from one place to another
- Entering prescription information into pharmacy software
- Take verbal prescription from a prescriber or their representative
What is the goal of transcribing?
Transform the prescription into a dispensed medication with correct instructions than can safely be interpreted by patients/caregivers
What are the requirements of a legend drug prescription?
- Patient name

What is the Article XII MSBOP Regulations?
Prescription drugs shall be dispensed only pursuant to a valid prescription or a valid order. A pharmacist shall not dispense a prescription which the pharmacist knows or should know is not a valid prescription. A Prescription Drug Order, to be effective, must be issued for a legitimate medical purpose by a Practitioner acting within the course of legitimate professional practice
What is an electronic prescription?
Electronically, faxed, hand delivered to pharmacies

What are somethings to consider when typing a new prescription?
- Pharmacists, interns, or techs can enter prescription
- Pharmacists are responsible for performing DURs
- Pharmacists may use clinical support systems and guidelines in performing DURs
- Check patient’s profile and reported allergies/health conditions.
- Check prescription for indications.
- Pay attention to copay.
How do you fill a prescription?
- Can be completed by pharmacists, interns, and technicians.
- Check and double check NDC.
What is the best practice to fill a prescription?
- Complete one prescription at a time
- Separate family members

How is patient behavior an indication of doctor shopping?
- Typically wants to refill early.
- PMP search reveals multiple pharmacies/prescribers.
- Appears to be under the influence.
- Too friendly/talkative.
- Presents multiple Rx’s but only wants the control.
How is medication taking/supply an indication of doctor shopping?
- Large quantities of controls or multiple controls
- Highly abused “cocktails” (opioid, benzodiazepine and muscle relaxant).
How is doctor shopping illegal?
- Indicates medication will be shared/sold
- Prescribers DEA registration or state license is suspended or revoked.
- Altered prescription.
What is a DEA number?
A number issued to a practitioner to identify persons authorized by the state and Drug Enforcement Agency to prescribe controlled substances
What are the components of a DEA number?
- It consists of nine characters; the first two are letters, and the next seven are numbers
- Originally, the first letter was A or B and the second letter was the first letter of the registrant’s last name.
- The second group of characters consists of a set of numbers that are unique to each registrant.
How do you verify a DEA number?
- Add the first, third, and fifth digits.
- Sum the second, fourth, and sixth digits, multiply this sum by 2, and add the results to the first sum.
- The last digit of the sum should correspond to the ninth character of the DEA number.
What are the guidelines of transferring a prescription in MS?
Only done by pharmacist or supervised intern
No transfers for controlled substances
What info do you need to transfer a prescription?
- Phone and address of the pharmacy.
- Name of the transferring pharmacist.
- Date prescription was issued.
- Original and last fill date.
- Original and remaining refills.
What are the practical points of transcribing prescriptions?
- The pharmacy receiving the prescription makes the call.
- If the patient is transferring multiple prescriptions, consider faxing.
- Remember to introduce yourself.
- If you are giving a copy to another pharmacy, be mindful of how you present the necessary information.
