What is transcribing?
- Act of writing down or copying from one place to another
- Entering prescription information into pharmacy software
- Take verbal prescription from a prescriber or their representative
What is the goal of transcribing?
Transform the prescription into a dispensed medication with correct instructions than can safely be interpreted by patients/caregivers
What are the requirements of a legend drug prescription?
- Patient name
- Date of insurance
- Name and address of prescriber
- Name, strength, dosage form, and quantity of drug
- Directions for use
- Refills
- Prescriber’s signature
What are the requirements of a control drug prescription?
- Patient address
- Prescriber DEA
What is the Article XII MSBOP Regulations?
Prescription drugs shall be dispensed only pursuant to a valid prescription or a valid order. A pharmacist shall not dispense a prescription which the pharmacist knows or should know is not a valid prescription. A Prescription Drug Order, to be effective, must be issued for a legitimate medical purpose by a Practitioner acting within the course of legitimate professional practice
What is an electronic prescription?
Electronically, faxed, hand delivered to pharmacies
What are the errors associated with eletronic prescription?
- More than one set of directions
- Incompatible directions
- Inappropriate quantities
What are e-scribes?
“True” electronic prescribing, or “e-prescribing,” exchanges prescriptions directly between a prescriber’s computer system and a pharmacy’s computer system.
What are the benefits of e-scribes?
Improve medication safety

May be a lack of communication with changes in orders

What are the practical points of telephone prescriptions?
- Make sure you get the name of the person calling – document.
- Make sure you have a phone number for the practice – document.
- Read back all information given to you – document.
- Document any follow up with prescriber’s office or patient.

- Allows you to record necessary information at your own pace.
- Allows you to listen several times if necessary.

Who can accept an oral prescription?
- Federal guidance – pharmacists, technicians, or interns
