What is uncomplicated cystitis?
Lower UTI affecting the bladder
What is acute uncomplicated pyelonephritis?
Infection of the renal pelvis and kidney
What is meant by uncomplicated when it comes to UTI’s?
No anatomical or neurological abnormalities of the urinary tract
What is vesico-ureteric reflux?
When urine flows backward from the bladder to one or both ureters and sometimes to the kidneys
What is UPEC?
Uropathogenic Escherichia coli
What is essential that UPEC express in order to cause disease?
Type 1 pili so they can colonize, invade, and be persistent
What are the clinical presentations of Cystitis?
Cloudy urine and dysuria
What are the clinical presentations of pyelonephretis?
Fever, loin pain, and tenderness
What do you look for in a urine dip stick with UTI?
Nitrites, leucocytes, and RBC’s
What is CAUTI?
Catheter-associated urinary tract Infection
What is meant by mid stream urine culture?
Collected mid stream to help identify where the colonisation is. It prevents contamination
When would asymptomatic bacteriuria be treated?
With pregnancy
What is a UTI relapse defined as?
The same pathogen causes the same symptoms again within 2 weeks of completing antibiotic treatment
What is a recurrent UTI defined as?
At least 2 culture proven episodes within 6 months or at least 3 times in a year
