Maladaptive (Complicated) Grieving

Ego Defense Mechanism:
Altruism
dealing w/ anxiety by reaching out to others
ex: nurse who lost a family member to a fire is a volunteer firefighter
Ego Defense Mechanism:
Sublimation
dealing w/ unacceptable feelings/impulses by unconsciously substituting acceptable forms of expression
ex: a person who has feelings of anger/hostility towards work supervisor sublimes those feelings by working out vigorously at the gym during lunch

Suppression
voluntarily denying unpleasant thoughts and feelings
ex: a person who lost his job states he will worry about paying his bill next week

Repression
putting unacceptable ideas, thoughts, and emotions out of conscious awareness
ex: a person who has fear of dentist’s continually ‘forgets’ his dentist appt.

Displacement
shifting feelings related to an object, person, or situation to another less threatening object, person, or situation
ex: mad at boss and going home to kick the dog

overcompensating or demonstrating the opposite behavior
ex: a person who dislikes her sister’s daughter offers to babysit to that her sister can go out of town

performing an act to make up for prior behavior
ex: an adolescent completes his chores w/out being prompted after having an argument w/ parent

creating reasonable and acceptable explanations for unacceptable behavior
ex: young adult explains he had to drive home from a party after consuming ETOH b/c he had to feed the cat
