Q

What provides high pressure fuel to the engines?

A

The Fuel Pump Metering Unit (FPMU) controls and supplies fuel to the engine nozzles at correct pressure and flow rate for engine start, correct engine operation and engine stop. There is one FPMU per engine.

Q

What is another function of the FPMUs?

A

On top of providing high pressure fuel to the engines, the FPMUs are responsible for controlling the compressor variable geometry vanes (CVG).

Q

What sends fuel to the FPMUs?

A

The electric fuel pumps in the main wing tanks send fuel to the FPMUs. The FPMSs are responsible for metering high pressure fuel flow to the engines.

Q

What are the magna-sticks and how are they used?

A

Three measuring sticks under each wing allow the pilots to verify fuel quantity prior to departure. Each measuring stick provides visual indication of the total fuel quantity of the associated wing tank.

Q

What does the E1 (2) FUEL LOW PRESS EICAS message mean?

A

Fuel pressure has dropped below 6.5 psi.

Although fuel pressure is not monitored by the pilots, whenever one of the electric fuel pumps fails to provide the required fuel pressure, or fails completely, the fuel system (without pilot input) will cycle between the remaining functioning electric fuel pumps until the pilots (per the QRH) select one of them.
