Systems (Coasts) Flashcards
What type of system is a coast?
Open.
What are some inputs for a coast?
Waves, tides and currents. Kinetic energy from these and thermal energy from the sun. Rock types and material from the processes material undergoes, all of these materials have potential energy.
What are some processes that happen at the coast?
long-shore drift, deposition, erosion, weathering and mass movement.
What are some outputs at the coast?
Land-forms of erosion and deposition. Caves, stacks, stumps, beaches, spits , sand dunes.
How does feedback occur at the coast?
Over months and seasons, they are often visual changes caused by human or weather interaction.
What are some examples of feedback at the coast?
Negative feedback- mass movement (rockfalls and landslides) , increased deposition in lower wave energy.
Positive feedback- freeze-thaw weathering, crack in rock expands with more water.
