sub-aerial processes Flashcards
What is a sub aerial process?
A process caused by changes in the atmosphere.
What is physical weathering?
Where rock is physically broken apart.
What is chemical weathering?
Where rock is broken down due to a change in its chemical composition.
What is biological weathering?
Where rock is broken down by biotic components growing in them.
What are some examples of physical weathering?
Wetting and Drying, Crystallisation, Exfoliation, Freeze Thaw
What are some examples of chemical weathering?
Carbonation, Oxidation
What are some examples of biological weathering?
Roots of plants and burrowing animals
How can weathering cause feedback?
Positive- Freeze thaw
Negative- Weathering is slowed by high deposition.
What is mass movement?
Downhill movement of sediment due to gravity?
What is Rockfall?
Sudden collapse of rock fragments down a steep slope caused in dry conditions by mechanical weathering or earthquakes.
What are landslides?
Block of rock moves rapidly downhill they are aided by little friction with the surface and can be caused by high rainfall or earthquakes.
What is Runoff?
Overland flow occurs down a slope or cliff face with high rainfall transferring water and sediment.
What are Mudflows?
Earth and Mud flow downhill as they are unconsolidated . Wet conditions caused water to get trapped in rock and force particles apart resulting in slope failure.
What is slumping?
Permeable rock overlay’s impermeable rock and pore water pressure builds. They leave scars and terraces.
What is soil creep?
Slow form of movement as individual particles move downhill , they rise due to rain and then dry forming terracettes
.
