Coastal lithology Flashcards
What are the factors affecting erosion?
Geology
Wave energy
Wave type
Management strategies
Sub-aerial processes
Lithology
Beaches
What is strata?
Layers of rock
What are bedding planes?
Horizontal breaks in strata
What are joints?
Vertical fractures caused by contraction/earth movements
What are folds?
Tectonic pressure buckles and crumbles rock
What are faults?
Stress or pressure fractures the internal strength of the rock causing it to slip
What is the dip?
The angle at which the strata lie
What does horizontal strata mean?
The cliff is very steep
If the strata is gently dipping what does this mean?
Lots of pressure and weathering
What does a steep dip in strata mean?
Slabs can fall as rock slide
If the strata dips inland what does this mean?
Steep, stable cliffs
What happens if the strata dips inland w/joints?
Joints act as slide planes for sediment, there are more joints and faults
