sediment cells Flashcards
What is a sediment cell?
A stretch of coastline bordered by 2 prominent headlands where the movement of sediment is contained.
Theoretically what type of systems are Sediment cells?
Closed - only energy can enter and exit
In reality what type of systems are Sediment cells?
Open- sediment can sometimes leave depending on the boundary (due to wave refraction)
What are some inputs to sediment cells?
Sediment that falls from cliffs, fluvial inputs, erosion of offshore bars.
What are some stores of sediment cells?
Bars, Banks, Beaches, Dunes.
What are some transfers of sediment cells?
Littoral drift, rip currents
What does each major sediment cell break into?
Sub cells
What happens in subcells?
The same as the bigger cell, just on a smaller scale. All the marine processes - deposition, erosion, transportation interlink.
