How is lupus nephritis investigated in systemic lupus erythematosus?
- Urinalysis and urine protein:creatinine ratio

- Anti-nuclear (85%) - initial step for diagnosis
- Anti-double stranded DNA (70%, specific) - levels vary with disease activity
- Anti-extractable nuclear antigen - anti-Smith
- Antiphospholipid (40%)
How is systemic lupus erythematosus diagnosed?
SLICC criteria/ACR criteria - confirm presence of ANA and establishing certain number of clinical features.
What is the leading cause of death as a complication of systemic lupus erythematosus?
Cardiovascular disease
What are the main complications of systemic lupus erythematosus?
- CVD, pericarditis
- Infection
- Anaemia
- Pleuritis, interstitial lung disease
- Lupus nephritis
- Neuropsychiatric issues
- Recurrent miscarriage
- VTE
What is the treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus?
- NSAIDs, prednisolone, hydroxychloroquine
- Methotrexate, other immunosuppressants
- Biological therapies in severe disease
