synthesis and transport of proteins Flashcards
where about on the ribosome is mRNA ‘read’?
On rough endoplasmic reticulum
what is post translational modification ?
When other chemicals are added to the proteins after they have been made in translation
polypeptide needs to be cut by an enzyme to become active
which cell is mRNA transcribed?
eukaryotic cells
what does the golgi body do?
processing, packaging of proteins
What do all eukaryotic cells have and why?
system of internal membranes, increases the total area of membranes
What does the endoplasmic reticulum form?
network of membrane tubules continuous with the nuclear membrane
What is the golgi body a series of?
flattened membrane discs
what is lysosomes?
degradative enzymes
what do lysosomes digest?
proteins,lipids, nucleic acids and carbohydrates
what do vesicles do?
transport materials between membrane compartments
Where are lipids synthesised?
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
where does the synthesis of all proteins begin?
cytosolic ribosomes (not attached) remain in the cytoplasm
what do transmembrane proteins do?
carries a signalling sequence to the rER and the proteins go into the lumen and are carried in the plasma membrane then carried through the golgi body in a vesicles then leaves the cell
what happens as proteins move through the golgi body?
they undergo post translational modification
what happens when vesicles leave the golgi body?
take proteins to the plasma membrane and lysosomes
