control of the cell cycle Flashcards
what is the progression of the cell cycle controlled by?
checkpoints
what are checkpoints?
assess conditions of the cell
halt progression to next phase until certain requirements are met
What are cyclin proteins involved in?
regulating the cell cycle
At the GL checkpoint what to Rb act as?
tumor suppressor
inhibit transcription of genes that code for proteins needed for DNA replication
how do you inhibit Rb?
phosphorylation
why do you need to have sufficient threshold of phosphorylation?
to be able to move onto the next stage
what is assessed at G2 checkpoint?
the success of DNA replication and any damage to DNA
What happens if the DNA is damaged?
triggers proteins (p53) stimulate DNA repair, arrest cell cycle or cell death
what happens at metaphase checkpoint?
controls progression from metaphase to anaphase
what can an uncontrolled reduction in the rate of the cell cycle result in?
degenerative disease
what can an uncontrolled increase in the rate of the cell cycle result in?
tumour formation
what can the gene proto-oncogene mutate to form?
tumour promoting oncogene
at what phase of the cycle is Rb phosphorylated
G1
