synthesis and decomposition Flashcards
what is a synthesis reaction, how does it work and what is an example of how to show it
Synthesis Reaction - Occurs when two elements combine to form a compound
A metal and a nonmetal can combine to form an ionic compound or two nonmetals can combine to form a molecular compound.
Element + Element ➞ Compound A + B ➞ AB Girl + Boy ➞ Couple
what is a decomposition reaction, how does it work and what is an example of how to show it
Decomposition Reaction - When a compound is broken apart into two or more elements or simpler compounds.
Ex. The heating of Mercury Oxide (HgO) can be used to prepare oxygen gas and mercury metal.
HgO ➞ Hg + O2
(Balanced 2HgO ➞ 2Hg + O2)
Compound ➞ Element + Element AB ➞ A + B Couple ➞ Girl + Boy
what is a double displacement reaction, how does it work and what is an example of how to show it
Single Displacement Reaction - Occur when one element displaces another element, producing a new compound and a new element.
A + BC ➞ AC + B
Activity Series - The first reactant must be higher on the list to bump out the second reactant in a chemical reaction.
When a displacement reaction occurs, you must figure out the charges and criss cross them to find the formula.
☆Nonmetals do not bump out metals!!!!!!
what is a double displacement reaction, how does it work and what is an example of how to show it
Double Displacement Reactions - The good ‘ol switcheroo
These type of reactions occur when two elements in différent compounds trade places.
AB + CD = AC + BD
