forming compounds Flashcards
what is a compound
A compound is a pure substance that contains two or more elements in a fixed combination.
what are the two types of compounds
There are 2 types of compounds:
Binary - contains only 2 different elements. (Bi means 2 !! hint hint nudge nudge)
Polyatomic - contains more than 2 different elements. (Poly means multiple !)
types of molecular bonds
diatomic/binary and others/acids
types of ionic bonds
diatomic, polyatomic and transition metals
what is ionic bonding
Ionic Bonding - metal and nonmetal (stealing electrons)
what is covalent bonding
Covalent Bonding - nonmetals only (sharing electrons)
characteristics of ionic compounds
Ionic Compounds
⇨Between a metal and nonmetal
⇨Are neutral
⇨Made up of a cation (metal) and an anion (nonmetal)
⇨ e- are transferred from one atom to another to form stable ions.
