Syntax 9 Flashcards
Predicate
provides some information about the subject
The subject
the finite verb agrees with
the subject isn’t necessarily the
agent of the sentence, the passive demonstrates this as it may seem that the doer is still the agent but in fact the grammatical subject would be the thing having something done to it
What does the subject precede?
The main verb (this can also be the case for auxiliary verbs)
What is a rule of subjects in English?
They are obligatorily present
What is the pro drop?
The possibility of leaving out a non emphasised pronoun in the sentence
Give two ways that a predicate can exist in a sentence
as main verb phrase or as a copula where the lexical content is provided by the NP, PP or AP
What is the effect of passivisation?
the event is described as being about the ‘undergoer’
Double object construction
when the order of the indirect and direct objects are reversed so that the indirect object is the first complement of the verb
