simple sentence
contains only one main clause
compound sentence
two main clauses joined together by a co-ordinating conjunction
co-ordinating conjunction
joins two parts of a sentence together in equal rank (one is not more important than the other)
complex sentence
consists of a main clause plus one or more subordinate clauses (dependent clauses)
the subordinate clause cannot stand on its own and can come before or after the main clause
subordinating conjunction
join two clauses to indicate that one is less important than the other
minor sentence
may lack a subject or a main verb, but the meaning is not lost
clothed imperative
command disguised through questions
open question
infinite acceptable answers
closed question
there is an acceptable answer or yes/no
