Define Syntax
The systematic study of how words are combined into phrases, and phrases into sentences
Define the two syntactic rues in linguistics
Prescriptive approach and Descriptive approach
Define Prescriptive Approach
Prescribes how language should be used (what makes “good” or “bad” grammar)
Define Descriptive Approach
Describes regular structures as it is used
Define Phrase
A string of words that function as a unit in a sentence
What is the key word which determines the properties of the phrase

What are phrase structure rules?
The structure of a phrase (of a specific type) will consist of one or more constituents in a particular order
Define Subject
Usually noun phrases, obligatory; The part of the sentence that tells us who performs the action denoted by the verb
Define Predicate
Specifies what the subject is engaged in doing
Define Predicator
Head of the verb phrase
Define Direct Object
The entities that undergo the activity or process denoted by the verb; usually follows the main verb (transitive verb)
Define Indirect Object
Usually noun phrases, the recipient of the action (who benefits from this?); occurs with ditransitive verbs
Define Adjunct
all additional information; optional
