Define Morphology
The study of morphemes
Define Morphemes
The minimal unit of meaning or grammatical function that cannot be further analysed
Define Free Morphemes
Morphemes that can stand by themselves as single words
Define Bound Morphemes
Morphemes that cannot stand alone and are always part of words; affixes
Define Free Lexical Morphemes
Carry the “content” of the message we convey; open class of words
Define Free Functional Morphemes
Pronouns, articles, conjunctions, prepositions, auxiliary verbs; closed class of words
Define Bound Derivational Morphemes
Used to make new words or words of a different grammatical category; can be prefixes or suffixes
Define Bound Inflectional Morphemes
Used to indicate grammatical function of a word (never change grammatical category of a word); all 8 in English are suffixes
Define Allomorphs
Different forms of the same morpheme (morphs are the actual form)
Define Root
Lexical content morpheme that cannot be analysed into smaller parts, may or may not stand alone as a word
Define Stem
When a root is combined with an affix; may or may not be a word and other affixes can be added to a stem to form more until target is formed
