What is Pragmatics
the study of ways people use and interpret language in actual conversations; studies speaker/writer meanings
What is Utterance
A stretch of speech/talk that is used in context; only when a sentence is uttered does it become an utterance
What is Reference
An act by which the speaker/writer uses language to enable a listener/reader to identify something
What is Inference
The additional information used by the listener/reader to create a connection between what is said and what must be meant; to make sense of what is not said
What is Contextual Information
the required knowledge for interpreting the meaning of an utterance
What is Linguistics context
The linguistic elements surrounding the utterance; what is said before/after a particular expression
What is Situational context
The non-linguistic environment in which an utterance is made; the utterance’s meaning is affected by the situational context and the beliefs of the parties present
What is Social context
Includes information about the relationships between people who are speaking and what their roles are; meanings differ based on their roles
