Synovial Joints (Paper 1) Flashcards
Definition of a joint
Place where two or more bones meet
Synovial Joint
Type of joint commonly found in limbs.
-Contains synovial membrane that produces synovial fluid
Cartilage
Covers ends of bones providing a smooth, friction free surface
Joint Capsule
Tough fibrous tissue surrounding synovial joints, usually supported by ligaments
Ligaments
Connects bones to bone.
Dislocation
When the bones of a joint seperate from their normal position
Bursae
Fluid-filled bag that helps reduce friction in a joint.
Tendon
Attaches muscle to bone
Role of cartilage
Acts as a cushion between bones preventing friction.
Role of Synovial Membrane
Produces synovial fluid
Role of ligaments
Keeps the joint stable and controls amount of movement.
Role of Synovial Fluid
Oil that lubricates the joint and allows smooth movement between articulating bones.
Hinge joint
Allows flexion and extension.
Vertebrae
Bones that form the spine
Ball and socket joint
Joint that allows many movements - Flexion, extension, abduction, adduction and rotation
