Sports psychology Flashcards
What is positive feedback
Feedback that is positive and includes praise
What is negative feedback
feedback that is negative and is used to identify a performers flaws
What is knowledge of results
This focuses on the result of the performance e.g. score is 3-0
What is knowledge of performance
This focuses on how well the performer performed and how they can improve
What is extrinsic feedback
Feedback that is provided by external sources
What type of feedback is suited towards beginners
Extrinsic feedback as they aren’t experienced enough yet for self-reflection
What is an introvert
Someone who is shy and participates in solo sports
What is an extrovert
Someone who is outgoing and usually plays team sports
What is direct agression
Aggression that is taken out on someone
What is indirect aggression
Aggression not aimed at someone but aimed at an object
What is direct aggression
Aggression that is taken out on someone
How can deep breathing affect arousal
It can lower your heart rate
How can visualisation and imagery effect arousal
-It can lower your arousal as it will reassure you that you can perform the action correctly.
How can positive self talk affect arousal
It can lower your arousal to its optimum level as it will allow you to calm yourself
Why is intrinsic more effective than extrinsic motivation
Intrinsic motivation comes from within so you are motivating yourself based on your own reflections and thoughts.
What is intrinsic feedback
Feedback that comes from within a performer
What type of feedback is suited to experts
Intrinsic feedback as they are experienced and already know how they can improve an action.
Four stages of the info processing model
- Input
- Decision making
3.Output
4.Feedback
3 ways to manage arousal
Deep breathing, visualisation, positive self talk
What does SMART stand for
S -specific
M- measurable
A- Accepted
R- Realistic
T- Time bound
Types of goals
Performance goals and outcome goals
What sports require high arousal
Hockey, Rugby and Football
Define Arousal
A mental and physical state of alertness varying from deep sleep to intense excitement
What type of sports require low arousal
Golf, Pool, darts
What is an outcome goal
A goal that is based on the score of a match or result
e.g. win 3-0
What is a performance goal
A goal that is based on your individual performance e.g. score 10 goals in a season
Define skill
A learned action that has the intention of bringing pre-determined results with maximum certainty.
Define ability
An individual, stable trait that determines an individual’s potential to learn and perform a skill.
Explain what a fine movement skill is
Involves small, precise body movements
What is a basic skill
Simple to perform
What is a complex skill
Difficult skill to perform as it requires a high amount of decision making to act it out.
What is an open skill
Affected by external stimuli
What is a closed skill
Not affected by external stimuli
What is a self-paced skill
Initiated and performed at the performers pace
What is an externally paced skill
Initiated and performed in response to a stimuli
What is a gross movement skill
Involves large body movements
What is a fine movement skill
Involves small, precise body movements
Describe the input stage
The information is received by the senses
Describe the decision making stage
You interpret the input and decide how to respond
Describe the output stage
You carry out the desired action
Describe the feedback stage
You are given feedback whether the decision was correct or not
what are the 4 types of guidance
-Visual
-Manual
-Verbal
-Mechanical
What is visual guidance
Guidance that uses examples that can be seen
What is manual guidance
When the coach physically guides the performer
What is verbal guidance
Guidance that is listened to
What is mechanical guidance
Guidance that uses training aids
