Synovial Joints Flashcards
1
Q
Three types of joints
A
- synarthrosis
- amphiarthrosis
- diarthrodial (synovial)
2
Q
Synarthrosis joints
A
- immovable
- bones are almost in contact but are separated by connective tissue
3
Q
Amphiarthrosis joints
A
- Slightly moveable
- contiguous (touching) surfaces
- connected by discs of flattened fibrocartilage
4
Q
Diarthrosis (synovia) joints
A
- freely moveable
- has a cavity lined with synovial membrane
- may have ligamentous/meniscus structures internally
-usually found between long bones
5
Q
List all joint components
A
- articular cartilage
- joint cavity
- fibrous capsule
- synovial membrane
- synovial fluid
- meniscus
- bursae
6
Q
Chondrocytes
A
- cells of articular cartilage
- produce & excrete the extracellular matrix
- including collagens and proteoglycans
7
Q
Synovial Fluid
A
- modified from plasma
- rich in proteoglycans and hyaluronic acid
8
Q
Cartilage nourishment
A
- blood vessels supply the joint capsule
- synoviocytes
9
Q
Meniscus
A
- made of fibrocartilage
- outer edge contains capillaries and nerve endings
- highly organised collagen II
