Synesthesia Flashcards
What is perception distortion?
Occurs when individual perception interpretation of a stimuli varies from how its commonly perceived
What is synesthesia?
A perception phenomenon where certain sensations are perceived using another perceptual system that is an automatic/involuntary response for the presence of certain stimuli that triggers the activation of another system.
- Generally experienced one-way
- Usually consistent & unique to the individual
- NOT classified as a perceptual disorder
What is grapheme-color synesthesia?
(visual)
Where an individual perceives graphemes (numbers, letters, etc.) as being different colors, in higher cases this can evolve into an entire word in a sentence being the same color
- Consistent and predictable
What is lexical-gustatory synesthesia?
(taste)
When an individual perceives words as having tastes, this is consistent and predictable.
(NOT SPECIFICALLY SYNESTHESIA)
What is spacial neglect?
Inability to attend to sensory stimuli on one side of the body, they can see everything normally but cannot perceive a side of their body
- Often temporary due to treatment
