Selective attention refers to?
Exclusively focusing on a specific stimulus or task while ignoring all other stimuli or tasks
What are some examples of selective attention?
- Tuning out conversations people are having in a crowded party to focus on the conversation you are having
- Maintaining attention on exclusively on the road and ignoring shops and people walking on the foot path
- Ignoring distractions occurring in a classroom to focus on note taking or answering questions
What is the key role of selective attention?
To act as a filter that helps to priorities incoming information according to importance (Personal or not)
What is the predictive principle (attention allocation)
Where we focus on stimuli that are personally meaningful and important to us amongst less meaningful stimuli
What is the uncertainty principle (attention allocation)
Where our attention is captured the most by unpredictable or unfamiliar stimuli due to the stimuli’s potential to provide useful information (good or dangerous)
