Synapses and chemical transmission Flashcards
1
Q
what is synaptic transmission
A
the process in which neighbouring neurons communicate
2
Q
how are signals in neutrons transmitted?
how are they transmitted in the synapse and by what?
A
electrically
chemically by neurotransmitters
3
Q
how is a message transmitted over a synapse 3 points
A
- it reaches terminal button
- sacks called vesicles are triggered by signal causing them to release neurotransmitters
- they travel across the synapse to the next neuron
4
Q
what happens when neurotransmitters arrive at next neuron
A
- it attaches to receptor sites in dendrites
- chemical message turned into electrical message
- neurotransmitters that are left are broken down by enzymes and reabsorbed into presynaptic neuron
5
Q
what is the
excitory effect
inhibitory effect
A
makes it more likely to fire
makes it less likely to fire
6
Q
what is summation in neutrons
A
- when a neutron receives several signals
- if there are more excitory messages than inhibitory it fires
