Neurons and electrical transmission Flashcards
what are neurons
nerve cells that communicate using electric and chemical signals
what do sensory neurones do and how are their axons and dendrites shaped
they send messages from the pns to cns
long dendrites short axons
what do relay neurones do and how are their axons and dendrites shaped
they connect sensory and motor neuroscience together as well at relay neurons
short dendrites short axons
what do motor neurones do and how are their axons and dendrites shaped
carry messages from cns to effectors
long axons short dendrites
what is the nucleus dendrite node of ranvier axon myelin sheath terminal button
nucleus- contains genetic information
dendrite- carries electrical signals
node of ranvier- speed up signal
axon- carries signals away from soma
myelin sheath- made of fat and speeds up signal
terminal button- communicate with next neutrons in the chain
how do neutrons communicate
message starts as an electrical signal
travels down neutron as action potential
when it reaches the synapse its transferred into a chemical signal
when a neutron is at rest how is it charged
negatively
what happens when a neutron fires?
the charge changes for a split second causing an action potential, creating an electrical impulse that travels down the neutron
