Sympathomimetics (Indirect Agonists) Flashcards
What does an indirect adrenergic agonist do?
Increases the net release of catecholamines from nerve terminals
What does Amphetamine do?
NET substrate and NE reuptake blocker. Its is lipid soluble and is excreted unchanged in urine.
What are the uses for Amphetamine? Side effects?
Uses: ADHD and narcolepsy
Side effects: Tachyarrthythmias
Where is Tyramine found?
Found in high concentrations in some fermented foods.
What is the MOA of Cocaine?
Inhibits Dopamine and NE reuptake
What is the MOA of Tricyclic antidepressants?
Imipramine, amitriptyline; Inhibit NET mediated reuptake of NE into presynaptic terminals in the CNS
Side effects: Postural hypotension, sinus tachycardia
What is a false neurotransmitter?
An amine that can be stored in and released from presynaptic vesicles but has no effect on postsynaptic receptors.
Side effect: Postural hypotension
