Sympatholytics Flashcards
Clonidine
Alpha2 agonist
Treats HTN, severe pain, ADHD
alpha-methyldopa
Alpha2 agonist
Treats HTN in pregnancy
Phenoxybenzamine
Nonselective alpha antagonist (irreversible; not reversed with norepingephrine)
Administered perioperatively to prevent a hypertensive crisis in patients with pheochromocytoma
Phentolamine
Nonselective alpha blocker (reversible; reversible with high doses of norepinephrine)
Give to patients on MAO inhibitors who eat tyramine-containing foods; cocaine overdose
Prazosin, terazosin, doxazosin, tamsulosin
Alpha1 selective blocker
Treats urinary symptoms of BPH (tamsulosin is safer to use in BPH patients with HTN)
Prazosin treats PTSD
All but tamsulosin treat HTN
Mirtazapine
Alpha2 selective blocker
Treats depression
Acebutolol, Atenolol, Betaxolol, Esmolol, Metoprolol
Beta1-selective antagonist
Metoprolol, carvedilol, and bisoprolol decrease mortality post-MI
Metoprolol and esmolol decrease AV conduction velocity (class II antiarrhythmics)
Nadolol, Pindolol, Propanolol, Timolol
Nonselective beta-antagonist (Beta1 and Beta2 effects)
Timolol treats glaucoma (decreases secretion of aqueous tumor)
Carvedilol, Labetalol
Nonselective alpha- and beta-antagonists
- do not end with “-olol”
Metoprolol, carvedilol, and bisoprolol decrease mortality post-MI
