Cholinolytics Flashcards
Tropicamide
Muscarinic antagonist, affects eye
Produces mydriasis and cycloplegia (inhibits ciliary muscle)
Benztropine
Muscarinic antagonist, affects CNS
Treats Parkinson disease
Scopolamine
Muscarinic antagonist, affects CNS
Treats motion sickness
Ipratropium, tiotropium
Muscarinic antagonist; affects respiratory system
Treats COPD, asthma
Oxybutynin, darifenacin, solifenacin
Muscarinic antagonist; affects GU system
Reduces urgency in mild cystitis and reduces bladder spasms
Glycopyrrolate
Muscarinic antagonist; affects GI and respiratory systems
Reduces airway secretions; helps to prevent drooling and peptic ulcer development
Symptoms of atropine overdose
Hot as a hare (decreased sweating) Dry as a bone (decreased secretions) Red as a beet Blind as a bat (cycloplegia - loss of accommodation) Mad as a hatter (disorientation)
Botulinum toxin
Blocks the release of ACh from presynaptic terminals
Curare
Competes wiht ACh for receptors on the motor end plate. Decreases size of end plate potential. Max doses can produce paralysis of respiratory muscles.
Hemicholinium
Blocks reuptake of choline inot presynaptic terminal –> depletes ACh stores from presynaptic terminal.
