Sx of pulmonary disorder Flashcards
1
Q
Dyspnea
A
- Abnormal SOB, sensation inappropriate for activity
- Not necessarily related to physio.- subjective
2
Q
Hypoxemia
A
Low bound oxygen in the blood
3
Q
Paradoxal nocturnal dyspnea
A
- intermittent dyspnea with onset within hour after assuming supine position
- Associated with CHF
4
Q
Cough
A
- Normal physiologic mechanism to defend against pathogens, clear tracheobronchial tree
5
Q
Wheezing
A
- High pitched whistling associated with breathing
- Due to airway narrowing
- Common in asthma
6
Q
Hemoptysis
A
- Expectoration of blood originating in vocal cords
7
Q
Chest pain
A
- Lung is pain free
- Differentiate between cardiac, pleura, diaphragms, mediastinum
- Due to inflammation
8
Q
Tachypnea
A
Abn. rate of breathing- increase in volume and minute ventilation
9
Q
Hyperpnea
A
- Increase in depth, may not increase in rate
- Nonspecific finding
10
Q
Cyanosis
A
- Blueish-grey discoloration of skin due to increased amount of unsaturated heme in capillary blood
- > 5g/dL Hg in capilary blood
- Levels may vary in anemia & polycythemia
11
Q
Pulsus paradoxus
A
- > 20 mmHg fall in systolic arterial pressure with inspiration
- Due to COPD, cardiac taponade, shock
12
Q
Stridor
A
- Musical sound head on inspiration over upper chest and neck
- Upper airway narrowing: swelling, vocal cords, abscess, foreign body
13
Q
Hyperresonance
A
- Greater than normal resonance, lower in pitch
- Overinflation: emphysema, asthma, pneumothorax
14
Q
Clubbing
A
Structural change of base of nail bed to angle greater than 180
- Chronic infection- CF, abscess, empyema, bronchiectasis
15
Q
Hypoxemia
A
- Low partial pressure of oxygen in blood <60 mmHg
- Due to ventilation- perfusion mismatch, reduced barometric pressure, reduced inspired oxygen
