Sweating Flashcards

1
Q

no sweating, aversion to cold, fever, headache, body ache, stuffy nose, heavy voice, sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat, cough

t: thin white coating
p: floating-tight

A

exterior wind-cold

pathogenesis: wind cold attacks exterior and is trapped in superfices; cold is yin evil and its property is coagulation so yang is easily damaged; since yang is being trapped, there is no sweating

A

cold-dampness attacking superficials

pathogenesis: cold is astringent and dampness is sticky; yang is trapped and interstices are obstructed, so sweat cannot come out

4
Q

spontaneous sweating, aversion to wind, aching body, sometimes hot, sometimes cold

t: thin white coating
p: moderate

A

disharmony between wei qi and ying qi

pathogenesis: deficient constitution and weak defensive qi, so interstices are insecure; nutritive yin is deficient, so easily attacked by exterior wind causing yin and yang imbalance; therefore skin pores cannot open and close properly, so there is obvious aversion to wind after sweating

A

wind-dampness attacking superficials

pathogenesis: common cold combined w/ wind, dampness, and bi syndrome; wind-damp attacks superfices, damaging defensive yang; or weak and deficient body constitution repeatedly attacked by wind-dampness and injures superfices, resulting in skin pores improperly opening and closing

Q

spontaneous sweating, worse w/ activity, always fear of cold, sob, rapid breathing, fatigue, dislike of speaking, bright white facial complexion, aversion to wind and cold, susceptibility to catching colds

t: pale w/ thin white coating
p: moderate w/o strength

A

HT-LU qi deficiency

pathogenesis: defensive exterior insecure, skin pores open, fluid leaks out, therefore spontaneous sweating; sweat is fluid of HT, LU governs whole body’s qi, skin, and hair

Q

spontaneous sweating, worse w/ activity, cold body and limbs, decreased appetite, abdominal distention, preference for hot drinks, loose stool, sallow yellow or pale complexion, or bright white facial complexion, low back/knee soreness

t: pale w/ white coating
p: empty-weak

A

SP-KD yang deficiency

pathogenesis: yang cannot control yin, resulting in spontaneous sweating; SP generates qi and blood, KD stores true yin and true yang, so should be secured

Q

night sweating, late afternoon tidal fever, red cheeks, five centre heat, slim body, irregular menstruation or seminal emission

t: red w/ scanty coating
p: thready-rapid

A

yin deficiency w/ interior heat

pathogenesis: yin deficiency generates interior heat; deficient fire is strong and yin fluid cannot be constrained, resulting in night sweating

Q

night sweating, headache as if wrapped, fatigue of limbs, poor appetite, slimy sensation in mouth

t: pale w/ thin white greasy coating
p: soggy-moderate

A

SP deficiency w/ dampness obstruction (tendency of damp-heat)

pathogenesis: excessive consumption of raw, cold, or fatty food, alcohol, or eating at irregular times injures SP and ST; SP deficiency affects T&T function, so damp turbidity generates inside, obstructing the ascending and descending function to cause night sweating

Q

night sweating, shorter duration of disease, alternating chills and fever, hypochondriac fullness and oppression, bitter taste in mouth, nausea

t: thin white or thin yellow coating
p: wiry-slippery or wiry-rapid

A

shao yang syndrome

pathogenesis: evil qi obstructing half exteriorly and half interiorly; external pathogen attacks but cannot be dispelled, entering shaoyang; struggle b/w right qi and evil qi forces fluid out, resulting in night sweating

Q

profuse sweating, cannot be stopped, hot and sticky sweat, or oily sweat, fever, warm limbs, thirst, desire for cold drinks, rough breathing, fatigue, red and dry lips

t: red, dry
p: empty-rapid or thready-rapid w/o strength

A

qi and yin collapse

pathogenesis: severe disease or chronic disease leading to yin and fluid exhaustion (often precedes collapse of yang, but order may be reversed)

Q

profuse sweating, bead-like sweat, clear and cool sweat, fear of cold, curling up when lying down, reversal coldness of limbs, spiritual malaise, pale facial complexion, faint breath, thirst, desire for hot drinks

t: moist
p: tiny or floating-rapid-hollow

A

yang collapse

pathogenesis: yin and fluid exhaustion resulting in nothing to constrain yang, so yang disperses; without yang, fluid cannot be generated, so there is collapse of yin and floating of yang; collapse of yin often occurs before collapse of yang (but order may be reversed)

16
Q

yellow sweat, fever, edema, heavy body, sensation of insects crawling in skin, thirst, inhibited urination

t: white coating
p: deep

A

nutritive and defensive qi obstruction

pathogenesis: fever with sweat + weak defensive qi w/ nutritive qi being suppressed, so heat fights w/ water; or soaking in rain or cold shower causes pores to close and nutritive and defensive qi to be obstructed

17
Q

yellow sweat, fever, slight edema, hypochondriac pain, poor appetite, bitter taste in mouth, reddish urine

t: yellow greasy coating
p: wiry-slippery

A

damp-heat accumulation

pathogenesis: exterior damp-heat attack or chronic interior dampness turning into heat; damp-heat accumulates, steaming spleen and stomach to cause yellow sweat

18
Q

unilateral sweating, lack of qi (sob), dislike of speaking, fatigue and weakness, pale and lustreless facial complexion, dizziness, numbness in limbs

t: pale w/ white coating
p: thready-weak

A

qi-blood deficiency

pathogenesis: over-work, chronic disease, or excess loss of blood causes qi and blood deficiency; qi and blood cannot circulate well over the body, so there is unilateral sweating

19
Q

unilateral sweating, tension in tendons, difficulty in limb flexion and extension, heavy limbs, difficulty in rotation if severe

t: white greasy coating
p: soggy or slow

A

cold-dampness obstruction (cold-damp bi)

pathogenesis: cold dampness invades, bi obstructs one side of the meridians, qi and blood flow is obstructed; skin pores cannot open and close properly, so there is unilateral sweating
ex. arthritis

20
Q

sweating in head and face, inhibited urination, jaundice, aversion to cold, fever

t: yellow greasy coating
p: soggy-rapid

A

damp-heat steaming upward

pathogenesis: dampness attacks and stagnation turns into heat; damp heat steams and cannot be spread; it can only travel up along the meridian, forcing out body fluid, therefore there is sweating in the head

21
Q

sweating in head and face, bright white or pale facial complexion, cold limbs, sob, fear of cold, fatigue and weakness

t: pale, tender
p: empty-weak

A

yang qi deficiency

pathogenesis: mostly due to recovery from disease, after child birth, or in elderly people with yang qi deficiency; interstices insecure, so there is sweating in the head

22
Q

sweating in chest and heart area, pale facial complexion, sob, fatigue, palpitations, forgetfulness, poor appetite, loose stool

t: pale, tender
p: empty-weak

A

HT-SP qi deficiency

pathogenesis: over-thinking, excess hunger or over sateity, or fatigue injures HT and SP qi, causing yang qi in chest to hypofunction, so defensive qi is weak and body fluids leak (chest yang deficiency)

23
Q

sweating in chest and heart area, irritability, insomnia, palpitations, forgetfulness, dizziness, tinnitus, dry throat and tongue, aches and soreness in loins and knees, seminal emission, steaming bone, tidal fever, short and yellow urine (less commonly reddish urine)

t: red w/ scanty coating
t: thready-rapid

A

HT-KD disharmony (HT-KD yin deficiency)

pathogenesis: yin and blood deficiency constitution, chronic disease damaging yin, excess loss of blood, or overthinking causes HT and KD yin deficiency and inability to control yang; deficient heat stirs inside, forcing out body fluids

24
Q

sweating in hands and feet, oppression in chest and epigastrium, no desire to eat, heavy body, short and yellow urine

t: yellow greasy coating
p: soggy-rapid or soggy-slippery

A

SP-ST damp heat

pathogenesis: overwork injures SP so T&T function is impaired; or dampness attacks SP and ST, causing dampness obstruction; stagnated dampness turns into heat and steams; body fluids travel to limbs from SP, therefore sweating in hands and feet

25
Q

sweating in hands and feet, fatigue and weakness, sob, no desire to speak, cold limbs, poor appetite, loose stool

t: pale w/ white coating
p: empty-weak

A

SP-ST qi deficiency

pathogenesis: excess hunger, over satiety, or fatigue damage SP and ST qi, disupting T&T function, causing body fluids to travel to limbs

26
Q

sweating in hands and feet, dry mouth and throat, especially after waking up, poor appetite, hunger but w/o desire to eat, or retching, irregular defecation

t: red w/ scanty coating
p: thready-rapid

A

SP-ST yin deficiency

pathogenesis: mainly caused by febrile diseases damaging yin, or over consumption of spicy food; heat accumulation damages yin, so deficient heat generates inside, stirring yin fluids and forcing body fluids out to limbs, resulting in sweating of hands and feet
