Head and Face Flashcards
head distention and pain, usually caused by anger, accompanied by fever, dry mouth, bitter taste, bulging of superficial veins over forehead, red face or red painful swollen eyes, agitation, insomnia, even deafness
t: red w/ yellow coating
p: wiry or rapid
LV fire blazing
pathogenesis: because of anger, repressed emotions, or excessive consumption of spicy foods, LV qi is stagnated and turned into fire; LV fire flares upward to disturb the clear mind causing head distention and headache
head distending discomfort w/ feeling of heaviness and muzziness as if being wrapped by a piece of cloth, accompanied by chest oppression, epigastric fullness, abdominal distending pain, vomiting, no desire to eat, heaviness of body and limbs
t: white greasy coating
p: soggy or slippery
dampness obstruction and qi stagnation
pathogenesis: living in a wet environment for a long time or going out in the rain; dampness invades and blocks the meridians; non-ascending of clear yang and non-descending of turbid yin cause head distention
head distending discomfort together w/ headache, aggravated by heat, accompanied by fever, aversion to wind, red face, sore and swollen throat, dry mouth and thirst
t: red tip w/ thin yellow coating
p: floating-rapid
wind heat attack
pathogenesis: yang meridians attacked by invading wind-heat evil, resulting in head distention
vertigo w/ distending headache, aggravated by anger, heavy head, light feet, irritability, restlessness, insomnia w/ lots of dreams, dry mouth, bitter taste
t: red w/ yellow coating
p: wiry-rapid
LV yang hyperactivity
pathogenesis: because of repressed emotions and anger, LV qi is stagnated and transforms into fire; fire injures LV yin, resulting in hyperactive LY yang flaring upward to disturb clear mind, causing vertigo and head distention
vertigo w/ blurred vision, aggravated by overthinking, sallow lustreless facial complexion, pale lips, palpitations, fatigue, breathlessness, weakness, insomnia, poor appetite, loose stool
t: pale
p: thready-weak
HT-SP qi-blood xu
pathogenesis: insufficient qi and blood to nourish the head and eyes leads to vertigo and blurred vision
vertigo w/ tinnitus, blurred vision, listlessness, mental fatigue, poor memory, premature senility, hair loss, sore and weak lower back and knees, seminal emission, impotence
t: thin, pale red
p: deep-thin; thready-weak in Chi position
KD essence xu
pathogenesis: brain is the sea of marrow, KD is the root of pre-heaven essence; KD stores essence and produces marrow; brain is not fully filled in case of KD essence xu
dizziness w/ heavy head sensation, fullness of chest and epigastrium, nausea, vomiting, no desire to eat or drink, heaviness of body and limbs, may have somnolence or strong desire to sleep
t: white greasy coating
p: soggy-slippery or wiry-slippery
dampness and phlegm obstructing middle jiao
pathogenesis: due to obstruction of m. jiao, clear yang cannot ascend and turbid yin can not descend, leading to vertigo, somnolence, and heavy head feeling
dizziness, vertigo, 5 centre heat, agitation, insomnia, sore and weak lower back and knees, may have tremor or numbness of limbs
t: red w/ little coating
p: thready-rapid
LV-KD yin xu
pathogenesis: due to hyperactive LV yang and deficient fire rising to disturb the mind
dizziness, tinnitus, vertigo, headache, dull expression, forgetfulness, retarded movement, disturbed sleep, fecal and urinary incontinence
t: pale w/ thin white coating
p: deep-thready
KD essence xu
pathogenesis: due to insufficient marrow production to fill up the brain, because of essence deficiency in old-age, over-worked patients
dizziness, fatigue, weakness, lustreless facial complexion, dull sluggish spirit, flaccid limbs
t: pale dull w/ stasis patches, thin white coating
p: thready-soggy
qi xu and blood stagnation
pathogenesis: usually seen in patients w/ chronic illness, severe blood loss, external head injury
headache w/ vertigo located at temple and vertex, aggravated by anger, irritability, tinnitus, insomnia, hypochondriac pain, dry mouth, red face
t: red w/ little coating
p: wiry or thready-rapid
LV yang hyperactivity
pathogenesis: LV fire from suppressed emotions or LV yang due to yin deficiency disturbs the clear orifice, leading to headache w/ vertigo; usually aggravated by anger
headache w/ hollow pain, aggravated by over-working, fatigue, weakness, poor appetite, breathlessness, loose stool
t: thin white coating
p: empty-forceless
SP qi xu
pathogenesis: non-ascending of clear yang and non-descending of turbid yin due to qi deficiency are not good for the clear orifice, leading to persisting headache
vague headache w/ vertigo, palpitations, insomnia, dry eyes, blurred vision, white facial complexion, pale lips
t: pale
p: thready-weak
yin blood xu
pathogenesis: head lacks blood nourishment, leading to vague headache w/ vertigo
chronic stabbing headache w/ fixed location, maybe hx of external head injury
t: purple
p: thready or thready-soggy
blood stasis obstructing head
pathogenesis: stagnated blood blocking the meridian causes pain
headache w/ drowsiness, vertigo, chest oppression, epigastric fullness, vomiting of phlegm and saliva, poor appetite
t: white greasy coating
p: wiry-slippery
turbid phlegm obstructing head
pathogenesis: SP-ST dysfunction due to improper eating habits leads to phlegm production; turbid phlegm ascends to mist clear orifice, causing drowsiness and dull headache
distending headache w/ vertigo, dry eyes, tinnitus, irritability, disturbed sleep, hypochondriac pain, dry mouth, red face
t: red w/ little coating
p: wiry or thready-rapid
LV yang hyperactivity
pathogenesis: because of repressed emotions, LV qi is stagnated and transformed into fire; fire injured LV yin; resulting hyperactive LV yang flares upward to disturb clear mind causing migraine headache that is aggravated by emotional fluctuation
chronic headache of fixed location and stabbing in nature, forgetfulness, palpitations, irregular menstruation
t: dull purple, purple patches
p: wiry or deep-soggy
blood stagnation affecting head
pathogenesis: blood stasis usually result of qi stagnation; with time, stasis enters and blocks meridian; patient may have hx of concussion, chronic illness, surgery
dull headache w/ drowsiness, fullness of chest and epigastrium, stomach pain likes warmth, vomiting out saliva and phlegm, reversal coldness of four limbs, poor appetite
t: white greasy coating
p: wiry-slippery
phlegm-fluid obstruction
pathogenesis: long-standing SP yang dysfunction leads to dampness and fluid retention; phlegm-fluid blocks meridian and impedes ascending of clear yang, causing drowsiness and dull headache
more tingling than numbness over scalp, lustreless facial complexion, dizziness, palpitations, pale lips, pale nails
t: pale w/ thin coating
p: thready-forceless
blood xu
pathogenesis: skin lacks nourishment due to blood deficiency
