Sustaining Life and Homeostasis Flashcards
Necessary life functions:
Maintains boundaries, movement, responsiveness, digestion, metabolism, excretion, reproduction, growth
Maintains Boundaries
Internal environment is separate from the external environment
Movement
Includes movement of the body from one place to another as well as blood, food, urine, etc. through the body
Responsiveness
Ability to sense changes in the environment and respond
Digestion
Breaking down food into molecules that can be absorbed by the bloodstream
Metabolism
Chemical reactions that occur within the body’s cells
(digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine)
Excretion
Process of removing waste from the body
(digestive, urinary, respiratory)
Reproduction
Process that occurs at the cellular level and organismal level
Growth
An increase in size of a body part of the organism as a whole
Physiology
Studies the function of the body; how the body works and carries out life-sustaining measures
Anatomy
Studies the structure of the body parts and their relationship to one another
What does the body need to maintain homeostasis?:
Nutrients, oxygen, water, maintain body temperature, atmospheric pressure, homeostasis
Stimuli
A change in the body’s environment
Receptor
Monitors the environment and responds to changes
Control Center
Determines the set point, which is the level/range of which a variable is maintained; determines what response should be
