What is the Human Development Index (HDI)?
Ranks countries levels of social and economic development using a number between 0-1. It measures human development experienced in different countries using 3 dimensions and 4 indicators.
Dimensions of the HDI
- A long and healthy life
- Knowledge
- A decent standard of living
Indicators of the HDI
- Life expectancy at birth
- Mean years of schooling
- Expected years of schooling
- GNI per capita
Advantages of HDI
- It takes more than just average incomes into account, providing both an economic and social representation of the level of human development experienced.
- It has captured the attention of media, communities and individuals, raising awareness about the importance of human development.
Limitations of the HDI
- Even though it moves past economic indicators it is still based on averages, therefore not providing an indication of the inequalities that exist within countries.
- No survey data is collected, so people’s feelings about their lives and issues within their communities are not reflected.
